Deer Management in North Nottinghamshire

North Nottinghamshire has Sherwood Forest running through the middle of it. Worksop and Ollerton sit inside what's left of the old royal forest and the Dukeries estates, Clumber, Rufford, Thoresby, while Retford, Tuxford, and the villages toward the Trent, East Markham, Kirton, Darlton, are flatter, more conventionally arable ground with a different set of pressures altogether.

The Dukeries and old forest ground

Fallow and red deer both have a long history around the historic Sherwood estates, and land bordering Clumber or Rufford can carry more established pressure than a first look at the map would suggest. It's ancient woodland in parts, which changes how fencing and guards need to be specified compared with a newly planted block.

Retford and the Trent-side villages

Toward Retford, Tuxford, and out to East Markham and Darlton, the land is more open and arable, and roe deer moving between hedgerows and field margins are the more common concern. It's a different job from managing pressure near the old forest estates, even though the two areas sit only a few miles apart.
