Qualifications
Trained, tested, and accountable
DSC1
The Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 covers safe, legal, and humane deer stalking, the foundation of precise, welfare-led culling.
DMQ
Deer Management Qualifications sets the standards for deer management training in the UK, backed by organisations including BASC and the British Deer Society.
Trained Person status
This allows a full initial inspection of culled deer, so venison can be safely and legally shared with landowners where there's some to go around. See what the qualifications mean.
How it works
What a deer stalker does for your land
Selective, not indiscriminate
A deer stalker's job is to take the right animals at the right time: the right species, sex, and number for what the land needs, to a plan you've agreed.
Within the law and the seasons
Each species and sex has its own open season in England, and muntjac have none. Stalking follows those seasons and firearms certification, and deer can't be shot at night without a licence. A night licence is only applied for where it's absolutely necessary, never as routine, and thermal is mainly used for spotting and counting deer. See the deer calendar.
Safe around people and stock
Shots are only taken with a safe backstop and full awareness of livestock, footpaths, and neighbouring land. If part of your land can't be worked safely, it isn't, and other options are discussed instead.
Free of charge
There's no fee to landowners or farmers for stalking carried out under an agreed plan, and where there's venison to spare, some is often shared back with you. It starts with a free survey.
Common questions
Questions about deer stalking
No. There's no charge to landowners or farmers for stalking under an agreed plan, and no callout fee.
At minimum, the Deer Stalking Certificate Level 1 (DSC1) for safe, legal, and humane stalking. If any venison is to enter the food chain, Trained Person status matters too, because it allows each carcass to be properly inspected. Chris holds DMQ, DSC1, and Trained Person status.
Yes, where a survey shows it's needed and you're happy with the plan. We cover Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, North Nottinghamshire, East Lancashire, South Durham, and Teesside.
Each deer species and sex has its own open season in England, and muntjac have none. Stalking is planned within those seasons and around your farming calendar. Deer can't be shot at night without a licence, and one is only applied for where it's absolutely necessary.
Safety comes first. Shots are only taken with a safe backstop and full awareness of livestock, footpaths, and neighbouring land. In tricky areas, a high seat is ideal for increasing safety: shooting from height gives a clear view and a safe, downward line of fire.
The carcass is handled correctly and inspected, the first step toward venison that can often be shared back with you.
