Deer Management in South Durham

South Durham covers two quite different landscapes: the North Pennine uplands around Teesdale and Weardale, Barnard Castle, Middleton-in-Teesdale, Wolsingham, and Stanhope, and the lower ground around Darlington, Bishop Auckland, and the old coalfield towns further east.

Upland Teesdale and Weardale

Higher, harder ground toward Middleton-in-Teesdale and Stanhope means hardier farming and rougher grazing, with roe deer working the woodland edges and field boundaries wherever shelter meets open pasture. Deer here tend to move with the weather, using valley bottoms and plantation edges more heavily over winter.

Lower ground and reclaimed farmland

Around Bishop Auckland, Crook, and Shildon, a lot of land was reshaped by mining and has since gone back to farming and amenity planting. Newer hedgerows and young trees on reclaimed ground can be particularly exposed until they establish, since there's often less existing cover nearby to dilute deer pressure onto.
