Deer Management in Teesside

Teesside is better known for its towns than its countryside, but there's plenty of farmland and woodland around them. South of the river, the ground climbs from Guisborough, Nunthorpe, and Skelton into the Cleveland Hills and the edge of the North York Moors. North and west, around Yarm, Wynyard, and the villages behind Hartlepool, it's lower, mixed farmland broken up by estate woods and shelterbelts.

Guisborough and the Cleveland Hills

Guisborough Forest and the wooded escarpment running toward Roseberry Topping and Loftus give roe deer plenty of cover right up against farmland and the edge of town. Deer come down off the woods to feed on the fields and gardens below, so damage on a farm here often comes from animals living somewhere else entirely.

Farmland on the edge of town

Around Yarm, Kirklevington, Wynyard, and Elwick, farms sit close to new housing, busy roads, and well-used footpaths. That shapes what can safely be done, and on some ground the right answer is fencing or guards rather than culling. A survey settles which approach fits before anything is decided.

New woodland and planting

New woodland and hedgerow planting goes in on farmland around the towns and along the foot of the hills, often with grant funding behind it. Young trees on open ground near existing woods are exposed to roe from the first winter, so it's worth getting the guard height right for the deer that are actually there.

Fox control on Teesside

The Tees estuary and the coast around Redcar and Hartlepool are important ground for waders and seabirds, and spring fox pressure matters on nearby farmland and nature sites. Inland, lambing flocks on the Cleveland Hills and poultry on smallholdings deal with more everyday losses. Our fox control is free and only goes ahead where it can be done safely.
