Lambing on the Bowland hill farms
This is sheep country first, and fox losses are felt most at lambing on the hill farms toward Slaidburn, Gisburn, and Grindleton. On open hill ground a fox can cover a lot of lambing field in a night, so control is concentrated on the weeks around lambing and the routes foxes take down off the fell.
Breeding waders in Bowland
The Forest of Bowland is one of England's strongholds for breeding waders like curlew and lapwing, which nest on open ground in spring. On farms managing land for them, reducing fox pressure through the nesting season can make the difference between nests that hatch and nests that don't.
Shoots and smallholdings in the Ribble Valley
Around Whalley, Longridge, and Hurst Green, shoots, smallholdings, and backyard poultry deal with foxes using the cloughs, woodland edges, and hedgerows. Release pens in summer and hen runs year round are the usual pressure points, and calling or stalking at dusk deals with the fox actually causing the losses.
How it works
Free, targeted, and done safely
Confirming it's a fox
Mink, badgers, dogs, and scavenging after a death from other causes can all look like a fox. The evidence is checked first, and if it isn't a fox, you'll be told so.
Thermal, night vision, and the rifle
Foxes are controlled by rifle, by a certificate-holding professional, using thermal and night vision to identify each animal and check what's beyond it. Depending on the ground, that means stalking, calling, or a bait station.
Timed to when losses happen
Lambing, release pens, and the nesting season each have their own window. Our fox calendar shows what foxes are doing month by month.
No charge, ever
There's no callout fee and nothing to pay at the end. The aim is to stop the losses, not to clear every fox from the area. See the full fox control service.
