Upper Teesdale and Weardale
Around Middleton-in-Teesdale, Stanhope, and Wolsingham, hill flocks lamb on open ground, and the North Pennines hold some of the most important breeding wader and black grouse populations in England. Spring is when fox pressure counts most up here, for lambs and ground-nesting birds alike.
Shoots on the lower dales
Shoots across the lower dales and the farmland around Barnard Castle and Staindrop face fox pressure on release pens in summer and on nesting game birds in spring. Control is planned around the keeper's routine, working the woodland edges and gills foxes use to reach the birds.
Poultry and smallholdings in the lowlands
Lower down, around Darlington, Bishop Auckland, Shildon, and Sedgefield, poultry keepers and smallholdings lose birds to foxes year round. A lot of this land sits close to housing and roads, so safety decides what's possible, and secure housing is always part of the conversation.
How it works
Free, targeted, and done safely
Confirming it's a fox
Mink, badgers, dogs, and scavenging after a death from other causes can all look like a fox. The evidence is checked first, and if it isn't a fox, you'll be told so.
Thermal, night vision, and the rifle
Foxes are controlled by rifle, by a certificate-holding professional, using thermal and night vision to identify each animal and check what's beyond it. Depending on the ground, that means stalking, calling, or a bait station.
Timed to when losses happen
Lambing, release pens, and the nesting season each have their own window. Our fox calendar shows what foxes are doing month by month.
No charge, ever
There's no callout fee and nothing to pay at the end. The aim is to stop the losses, not to clear every fox from the area. See the full fox control service.
